English Premier League Offers Games Stream Only

Putting a Little English (Premier LG) on Steaming Sports Why it matters to you: This is the first major sports league to offer 2nd tier games on stream only. For the past several years, many of you have enjoyed a great value from the English Premier League Extra Time programming. These weekly games changed the position of EPL in our business and many of you have a healthy traffic built around that content. Unfortunately, that is about to change. This week’s EPL kick offs will not be available to you on DIRECTV. NBC holds the contract and has decided to monetize the second tier games that don’t make their national broadcast channels via a streaming-only approach. This means that you will only see games on NBC Sports Network and the flagship NBC network chain. Otherwise, games that aren’t available on [...]

Is Your Restaurant Ready for Football Season Kickoff?

Register for a play-by-play to maximize revenue during the upcoming season. By Hot Schedules, content parter for this year's Football Marketing Bootcamp It’s that time of the year again! If you’re a diehard football fan, then you know your weekends revolve around the big game. And if you’re a restaurant owner or manager, then you definitely know that you and your team need to be ready for the rush on game day. The seasonal influx of football fans at your business can be a blessing, but if you aren’t prepared, it can also be a curse. With that in mind, here’s what you need to be thinking about before kickoff: How busy is your restaurant going to be? Is your inventory stocked? What specials are you offering? Is your staff prepared? If you’re like us, you’ve been counting down the days for football [...]

The Sports Bar Marketer’s Playbook for Football Season

By Buzztime, partner for the Football Marketing Bootcamp When football season starts, will you be ready? Expecting crowds without a marketing plan is a risky move. It’s like throwing a Hail Mary or relying on the receiver to run 98 yards on a kickoff return – at every game. Instead, be proactive! Plan for success with these marketing plays that will win over customers during football season. Play #1: Create a Winning Schedule Pull out your whiteboard just like a coach and create a calendar of important football dates. Start by identifying the “home” teams in your area, both pro and college. Then, plot out televised game schedules for each team. Include dates for games and events so big, it doesn’t matter which teams are involved: the “big” game in February, key bowl games, and even draft and signing days. Don’t forget high [...]

The seminars will be available via live stream on our YouTube channel and you can register for the event by clicking here! Session 1: All Sports are Social Host Rob Cressy of Cress Media. We Told You So! Internet Streaming is Important

Don’t Blow it with Guests by Not Showing Streaming Sports You have probably heard someone say, “I hate to say, I told you so!” right before they say, “I told you so!” That’s a little how I felt on Sunday when I receive a flurry of calls from subscribers expressing their dismay and disappointment that we had neglected to list the Barcelona vs. Eibar, La Liga Espana soccer match. Just one problem…that match was exclusively on Live Stream and not available on broadcast TV. Therefore let me just say, “I told you so!” We have been screaming from the rooftops for years about the value and importance of streaming live sporting events and only those of you that listened were able to deliver the game your guests wanted on demand. The cost of accomplishing this feat was an inexpensive netbook or other internet enabled [...]

Why ESPN College Extra Sucks (and Why You Need It!)

For years I have advocated that any operator that dares to refer to themselves as a sports bar has an inherent obligation to buy all the programming available via DIRECTV or their cable operator. I have been passionate and adamant that this is the way to build your business and prove to your guests that YOU ARE THE PLACE to watch sports. Well, this past week, my resolve has been sorely tested by a sports PPV package, ESPN College Extra (ESPNCX). ESPN College Extra is a hybrid of two previous stations — ESPN Game Plan and Full Court. The problem with this union is that College Extra has essentially thrown away the wheat and kept the chaff. For example, last week in 27 games delivered by ESPNCX, only three were between ranked teams. With NCAA Football, out of 140 games aired there was a grand total of two games with ranked [...]

Terrific & Free March Madness Promo for Your Sports Bar

Sponsored by Frank's RedHot As an independent and small chain operator, you always seem to struggle when it comes to creating and deploying effective promotions in your locations. Paper signs, poorly designed POP and ‘meh’ quality calls to action seem to pervade. This is especially true for big national events like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. That’s why we are constantly encouraging you to leverage your vendors as marketing partners. Consequently, we are very excited to announce a great (and cost free) promotion being offered by our partners at Frank’s RedHot Sauce and the folks at Dos Equis. This promotion is a great combination of high quality deliverables coupled with an easy and compelling call to action. One of the great features of March Madness is the incredible outbursts that occur for all manner of big plays. Whether it’s a buzzer beater to win [...]

Wings, Beer & March Madness… a Match Made in Sports Bars

Sponsored by Frank's King of Wings If there is any staple in the sports-themed segment of our industry, it’s the happy marriage between wings, beer, and sports. Consider this: Have you ever been to a sports bar that didn’t carry chicken wings? Sure, plenty of them don’t have pizza or barbecue, but I would be shocked if the number of sports bars that don’t serve chicken wings broke into the double digits. This got me thinking, we don’t pay proper attention to this incredibly popular (and profitable) menu item with its significant contribution to the triumvirate that is wings, beer, and sports. It’s time for that to change. We wanted to give you some ideas about how to couple wings with beer & sports, starting with the upcoming NCAA Basketball tournament. With 68 teams qualifying, March Madness literally engages the entire country [...]

What it Takes to be the Sports Bar of the Future

A major national sports-themed operator did a guest survey several years ago and found the number one reason guests visit their establishments is to watch sports. Shocking, huh? It stands to reason that if guests are expressing their desire to enjoy great content at your place, you should deliver it in the most efficient and highest quality ways possible. But there’s a rub. What defines a great sports-watching experience has changed dramatically over the past few years. Guests want to view games on-demand, check their own fantasy results, see a wider variety of content, and expect you to keep them informed about what they can see at your place. This is why, we have identified four areas that you can address right now to ensure your sports bar remains a great place to watch games well into the future. Update Your AV Systems [...]

8 Things Every Sports Bar Must Have to Win

Whether you have 10 or 100 TVs in your restaurant, understanding the elements that create a great sports bar experience requires organization, planning, and review. Here are eight things every sports bar must have. Follow them and you will grow. Ignore them and your guests will eventually look elsewhere for the service standards. #1 The Latest Technology The restaurant industry truly led the pervasion of HD TV. Since the 2000s, the technology has taken several leaps forward. Unfortunately, many sports-themed operators are still employing technology solutions from the 1970s. Your goal should be to make your average sports fan fantasize about having your A/V system in their home. With today’s matrix systems, content can be deployed to any and all TVs using a tablet or mobile phone to control all elements of the A/V. What’s even more apparent is that guests expect us to [...]

3 Tips To Building Sports Bar Promotions That Work

This post originally published on NextRestaurants.com By Brandon Hull Is your sports bar one of many in a busy part of town? You know, one of those “restaurant row” areas or party hubs? I recently talked with Nick Fosberg, a creative and smart guy, and I’m going to share with you some lessons on bar promotions that work, straight from his real world of running restaurants and bars. No pie-in-the-sky thinking. Nick not only runs his own bar, and is starting a second one, but teaches other bar and restaurant owners how to succeed with creative marketing tactics. If you own a sports bar and haven’t checked out his stuff, you really should. He teaches a system called Loyal Regular Value Optimization that helps differentiate a bar or restaurant with its marketing. (No affiliate relationship with Nick, I get nothing for forwarding you to him; he’s just [...]
