The 2018 NCAA March Madness Round 2 TV Schedule

March Madness 2018 has already been a banner year for upsets, last second shots, and weird tourney happenings. With only two number one seeds surviving, the second weekend it’s a wide-open field. In fact, Virginia was the first number one seed to ever lose in the first round…Go Retrievers, although they lost on Sunday. Just to clarify how many upsets there were: Of the 16 top seeds only seven remain. This is the worst performance of top seeds in tournament history. But have no fear, there are plenty of recognizable names still remaining, including last year’s champion, Villanova. Perennial powerhouses like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and Syracuse are still alive and looking to knock off Nova. How Sports Bars Can Prep for March Madness

Every year as March approaches, we field inquiries about the schedule for the NCAA March Madness Tournament and how to best prepare for it. Unfortunately, every year we respond by explaining, it’s really just the first two days of full field play that can be called madness. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare or promote to get as much from the event as possible. Check out our recent blog with some new ideas for promoting the NCAA Tournament. What makes the tournament great before it starts is also what slows it down as it progresses. With 68 teams making the cut, there is hardly a place in the US that doesn’t have a stake in the tourney before the first tip-off. Unfortunately, once play concludes on Thursday and Friday, that number dwindles to just 32 teams, and by Sunday [...]

Download the 2018 Winter Olympics TV Schedule Here!

The Winter Olympics officially begin on February 9th from PyeonChang, South Korea. During each Olympiad we try to offer you some insights on how to leverage them to your best advantage. To that end, there is good news and bad news for restaurants and bars hoping to attract guests to watch the events unfold at their locations. The good news is that there is an enormous amount of live coverage and ALL events will be available live. The bad news is that many of those events are at odd hours due the 12 hour time difference between Korea and North America. As with every Olympiad, the most important event is the first one -- the Opening Ceremony. The excitement associated with seeing all the teams march through the central stadium in their full international regalia has captivated audiences forever. This [...]

It’s Not the NFL’s Fault

When the founder of Papa John’s decided to blame the NFL for his sagging sales, he was met with some pretty heavy hits from other pizza players in the market. Both Domino’s and Pizza Hut (arch-enemies, BTW) came out in response to dispute the claim. Now we have another food service put blame on the NFL and the league’s declining ratings for sales woes -- Sanderson Farms, Inc. The chicken wing company’s CEO made claims that their long run of high wing prices has ended because of waning interest in the league. A little examination of this claim sure makes it hard to take seriously. Let’s start with some facts. Full-service restaurants have been seeing significant traffic declines for the past 24 months. This has been the case as wing prices have been elevated to new heights. This is a [...]

3 Steps to Making Wings a Centerpiece of Your Tailgating Menu

The NCAA Bowl Season is a time when folks gather to watch their favorite university duke it out for bowl supremacy. We already know that wings and football just make sense and that’s why we strongly encourage you to drive real results by offering wings as a centerpiece to your Tailgate Catering menu. With the explosion of delivery during the past year and fully prepared meals from grocery stores, operators are faced with the challenge re-capturing the business that has moved to either of these options. Catering is a perfect solution. The home tailgate has grown over the years with fans coming together to watch games on their own outsized TVs in the comfort of their own homes. Sports Bars Aren’t Dead, But They May Be On Life Support

If bad news comes in waves, then our industry -- and specifically the sports themed segment -- is getting rolled over by one mother of an ocean storm. For the past year, we have covered story after story lamenting the sales declines, the cannibalization of full-service by fast casual, and the enormous staffing challenges that face all operators in the current economy. This decline has been particularly hard on sports-themed operators as we have seen several high profile bankruptcies and worse-than-market sales reporting from some of our biggest players. What does all this mean for the future of the “sports bar” and is there anything you can do about it? Who’s to blame? The sales performance of full-service restaurant operators has been declining steadily for the past 18 months or so. In general, the entire segment is experiencing a shift [...]

Yahoo, The NFL, and You!

The first streaming game of the NFL season is this Sunday at 9:30am ET/6:30am PT and we, at The Rail, couldn’t be more excited. Why? Because that means we can debut our first entry onto our Streaming Tab on the SportsTV Guide dashboard. Yes, streaming again! We know you guys don’t really care about streaming sports or even want to invest the few minutes to assess where it fits with your overall sports programming, but it’s coming and there is nothing any of us can do about it. This game between the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars is exclusively on Yahoo.com for anyone outside of these two demographic markets. If you are in or around Baltimore/Jacksonville you will get the game on your local CBS affiliate and it will be listed on your guide. However, if you are anywhere else, [...]

What the Mayweather-McGregor Fight Tells Us About Sports Live Streaming

One week this past Saturday night, the world was captivated by the spectacle that was Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Conor McGregor. It is estimated that around 100 million folks tuned in to see the biggest fight ever on PPV -- and a lot of them were live streaming. Except that many of those who tuned in experienced significant technical issues, both with the in-line broadcast delivery and streaming options. When the numbers are finally tallied it’s expected that the fight garnered 5 million PPV orders from cable/satellite operators, the UFC app, and the Showtime app. Those are staggering numbers, which is why you can understand that the systems for delivery were strained. We have been trying to convince you that integrating streaming sports into your programming portfolio is the answer for today and the future. Unfortunately, when issues like this [...]

Five Reasons to Know What’s on TV for Sports…

The SportsTV Guide is a utility serving restaurant operators for almost 25 years. Too often, when we offer our service to a restaurant operator, their first response is, “We aren’t a sports bar!” It’s high time someone challenged this assertion. It’s a fallacy and always has been. While only about 15% of all restaurants are traditional sports-themed operators, any bar or restaurant with at least one TV can become a sports bar based exclusively on a major event. Imagine, your local team is playing for a championship. Won’t your bar have at least a few folks who would want to watch that game live? Here are five compelling reasons you need to be more aware of what’s on for sports: 1. It’s what your guests want! Our offices are in Boston and there are plenty of restaurants with TVs that aren’t [...]
