How Sports Bars Can Win the Tour de France

The Tour de France is one of my favorite events of the year. Full disclosure, I ride 100+ miles a week during the summer and think this sport is amazing. However, that shouldn’t distract from the fact that it’s a cool event that fills in content in July, which could otherwise be a pretty barren month. The trick is how to market for it…or if you even should. So, let’s explore the event and see if we can benefit from it. Tour de France 101 To start, the Tour de France (TDF) is a 23-day event with some of the most interesting visual content you’ll ever see on TV. The race ranges all over France from the countryside to the sea and everything in between. They visit both the Pyrenees in the West, and the Alps in the East for [...]

The One Soccer Promotion Every Sports Bar Should Run

Heineken has come up with a simple, but elegant soccer-themed promotion that we encourage everyone to participate in. The World Cup is a bit of a mystery to many North American operators. We have sports on lockdown in these parts and football doesn’t mean soccer here. So, every four years when the World Cup boots off, our operators grow concerned they won’t be able to take advantage of the event. This year’s tournament is further complicated by being in Russia where the time is 7 hours ahead of the US East Coast. Determining a promotion that will engage your football fans (sorry, it’s just not soccer outside the US) can be complicated. So, here’s how the promotion works… Heineken provides all the marketing materials you need to promote their RAISE THE SCARF promotion. Any guest that buys four bottles of [...]

How Sports Bars Can Plan for New Media Entertainment

A frequent question we field from sports-themed operators is how to differentiate themselves from their competitors. The time where counting on HD TVs and the NFL Sunday Ticket as that difference maker is long past. So, what is your next move if you want to truly separate your operation from any other competitor? It’s all about the content. In recent posts, we have reviewed what we believe are the three best options for alternate content available today: streaming sports, gaming entertainment and digital signage. An effort to implement any of these options will bear fruit, but you have to execute well or it will just be another thing you tried. That’s why we are offering this implementation guide. It includes a checklist of items you must consider and address to successfully execute a new media program and turn it into [...]

How Sports Bars Can Market International Soccer Tournaments

Once every four years the world comes together to celebrate the Beautiful Game with the biggest international soccer tournament. Soccer fans, long suffering in the United States, can now watch the entire tournament on ESPN and have been able to for several iterations. This year’s event is being held in Russia and is sure to be one of the world’s most watched sporting events. This means it’s popular and easily available. So, sports bar operators better have some solid marketing ready to give guests a reason to check out the games at your joint. That leads us, inexorably, here to discuss the best ways restaurants and bars are celebrating the world championship of soccer (could I sound any more American with that description?). But, in fact, that’s exactly one of the ways you can leverage the tournament, by using good [...]

The relationship between sports and social media has been evolving since Facebook hit the scene in 2004. Download Your Free 2018 NHL Playoffs TV Schedule

The NHL Playoffs are finally here. After 82 games, there are only 16 teams left standing with a chance at the Stanley Cup.  In the East Tampa Bay accumulated the most points and secured home-ice advantage through the conference schedule. In the West, it is Nashville that will have home-ice all the way through if they make it to the finals. There’s no doubt that the NHL Playoffs is our favorite tournament is all of sports. If you don’t normally watch hockey, you won’t see a difference, but if you do, it’s a totally different game than regular season play. The speed, the athletes and the competition all elevate to levels that even the uninitiated can acknowledge. The sports is really exciting this time of the year. 2018 NHL Playoffs TV Schedule (Round 1) Eastern | Central | Mountain | [...]

What Does the AAF Mean to Sports Bars?

By now you’ve likely heard. There are two new professional football leagues vying for the opening left by the NFL’s most recent woes. Just a few years ago an alternate league would have been unthinkable, but the NFL has seen ratings drops while the player protests, and the head injury issues erode their stranglehold on all things football in the US. Enter Chuck Ebersol and Vince McMahon. Ebersol is the son of former NBC Sports President Dick Ebersol, who was a partner of Vince McMahon in the failed XFL experiment from 1999. Fast forward almost 20 years and it appears the landscape has changed -- even if the central players have not. While all these machinations are fascinating, what does The Alliance of American Football (AAF) mean to sports bar’s operations and marketing efforts? Below are three potential advantages from [...]

The 2018 NCAA March Madness Round 2 TV Schedule

March Madness 2018 has already been a banner year for upsets, last second shots, and weird tourney happenings. With only two number one seeds surviving, the second weekend it’s a wide-open field. In fact, Virginia was the first number one seed to ever lose in the first round…Go Retrievers, although they lost on Sunday. Just to clarify how many upsets there were: Of the 16 top seeds only seven remain. This is the worst performance of top seeds in tournament history. But have no fear, there are plenty of recognizable names still remaining, including last year’s champion, Villanova. Perennial powerhouses like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and Syracuse are still alive and looking to knock off Nova. Of course, after Thursday and Friday, it calms a bit -- unless your local team is still alive, then the real madness begins. The good news is there are no surprises in this one. You always have a minimum of two days to prepare for whatever happens with your local entrant. How Sports Bars Can Prep for March Madness

Every year as March approaches, we field inquiries about the schedule for the NCAA March Madness Tournament and how to best prepare for it. Unfortunately, every year we respond by explaining, it’s really just the first two days of full field play that can be called madness. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare or promote to get as much from the event as possible. Check out our recent blog with some new ideas for promoting the NCAA Tournament. What makes the tournament great before it starts is also what slows it down as it progresses. With 68 teams making the cut, there is hardly a place in the US that doesn’t have a stake in the tourney before the first tip-off. Unfortunately, once play concludes on Thursday and Friday, that number dwindles to just 32 teams, and by Sunday [...]

Download the 2018 Winter Olympics TV Schedule Here!

The Winter Olympics officially begin on February 9th from PyeonChang, South Korea. During each Olympiad we try to offer you some insights on how to leverage them to your best advantage. To that end, there is good news and bad news for restaurants and bars hoping to attract guests to watch the events unfold at their locations. The good news is that there is an enormous amount of live coverage and ALL events will be available live. The bad news is that many of those events are at odd hours due the 12 hour time difference between Korea and North America. As with every Olympiad, the most important event is the first one -- the Opening Ceremony. The excitement associated with seeing all the teams march through the central stadium in their full international regalia has captivated audiences forever. This [...]

It’s Not the NFL’s Fault

When the founder of Papa John’s decided to blame the NFL for his sagging sales, he was met with some pretty heavy hits from other pizza players in the market. Both Domino’s and Pizza Hut (arch-enemies, BTW) came out in response to dispute the claim. Now we have another food service put blame on the NFL and the league’s declining ratings for sales woes -- Sanderson Farms, Inc. The chicken wing company’s CEO made claims that their long run of high wing prices has ended because of waning interest in the league. A little examination of this claim sure makes it hard to take seriously. Let’s start with some facts. Full-service restaurants have been seeing significant traffic declines for the past 24 months. This has been the case as wing prices have been elevated to new heights. This is a [...]
