Beta Test Our New ‘Q Score’ Program

When SportsTV Guide started in 2003, we delivered 90% of our service via fax machine. That number has flipped to under 3% of our subscribers in the intervening 15+ years. The technology we employ today has profoundly changed the quality and reliability of our product and we see a bright future in further leveraging technology to improve our product and its value. To that end, we are ecstatic to inform you all about a beta test we are undertaking to validate a new feature. We are inviting current STVG subscribers to help us vet our new Q Score program that will rate game quality for all events listed on your SportsTV Guide. The Q Score will help sports bar operators and managers identify the best matchups and games for their establishment to show. If you want to see this powerful [...]

Five Reasons to Know What’s on TV for Sports…

The SportsTV Guide is a utility serving restaurant operators for almost 25 years. Too often, when we offer our service to a restaurant operator, their first response is, “We aren’t a sports bar!” It’s high time someone challenged this assertion. It’s a fallacy and always has been. While only about 15% of all restaurants are traditional sports-themed operators, any bar or restaurant with at least one TV can become a sports bar based exclusively on a major event. Imagine, your local team is playing for a championship. Won’t your bar have at least a few folks who would want to watch that game live? Here are five compelling reasons you need to be more aware of what’s on for sports: 1. It’s what your guests want! Our offices are in Boston and there are plenty of restaurants with TVs that aren’t [...]

Why ESPN College Extra Sucks (and Why You Need It!)

For years I have advocated that any operator that dares to refer to themselves as a sports bar has an inherent obligation to buy all the programming available via DIRECTV or their cable operator. I have been passionate and adamant that this is the way to build your business and prove to your guests that YOU ARE THE PLACE to watch sports. Well, this past week, my resolve has been sorely tested by a sports PPV package, ESPN College Extra (ESPNCX). ESPN College Extra is a hybrid of two previous stations — ESPN Game Plan and Full Court. The problem with this union is that College Extra has essentially thrown away the wheat and kept the chaff. For example, last week in 27 games delivered by ESPNCX, only three were between ranked teams. With NCAA Football, out of 140 games aired there was a grand total of two games with ranked [...]

8 Things Every Sports Bar Must Have to Win

Whether you have 10 or 100 TVs in your restaurant, understanding the elements that create a great sports bar experience requires organization, planning, and review. Here are eight things every sports bar must have. Follow them and you will grow. Ignore them and your guests will eventually look elsewhere for the service standards. #1 The Latest Technology The restaurant industry truly led the pervasion of HD TV. Since the 2000s, the technology has taken several leaps forward. Unfortunately, many sports-themed operators are still employing technology solutions from the 1970s. Your goal should be to make your average sports fan fantasize about having your A/V system in their home. With today’s matrix systems, content can be deployed to any and all TVs using a tablet or mobile phone to control all elements of the A/V. What’s even more apparent is that guests expect us to [...]

Copa America 2016 & European Championship 2016

You may have heard soccer referred to as the “beautiful game.” Maybe you agree, maybe you don’t, but for sure you should like it this summer with the arrival of two major international competitions. Starting Friday, June 3rd, the Copa America 2016 lands on US soil for the first time ever. On the following Friday, June 10th, the European Championship kicks off, often referred to as the “real World Cup.” The great news is they both air during different revenue periods and are 100% on regular TV channels. If you don’t remember, the Copa America 2016 was central to this past year’s FIFA corruption scandal, complete with federal indictments, international intrigue, and embarrassing perp walks. That’s all behind us now and the event is sure to be a big deal with venues coast to coast hosting many of football’s (soccer to you and me) international [...]

This Weekend in Sports TV: February 6, 2016

Super Bowl 50 is this week and that means the weekend sports schedule is fairly horrible. Nobody wants to compete with a game that draws 100 million sets of eyes. That being said, there are some quality items that you can use to build other parts of your guest following. UFC Fight Night Let’s start with the free UFC event on Saturday at 8pm ET on FS1(219). The main event features Johny Hendricks vs Stephen Thompson. Both are contenders fighting for a shot at the 170lbs Title. Free events like these are the foundation you need to build upon to justify your investment in the UFC PPV schedule. Add to these programming like The Ultimate Fighter and you can prove to your guests that you get MMA and UFC right. NCAA Basketball Heats Up The NCAA Basketball schedule is fairly light this weekend [...]

AHHH, NASCAR, FINALLY This weekend kicks off with the beginning of the NASCAR season and it’s all about the newly renovated facilities at the Daytona International Speedway. With the live practice runs on Friday night, your guests will get their first view of the incredible $400 million worth of upgrades. And that’s not the only thing in NASCAR that got upgrades this year. Check out this year’s preview of the new team paint schemes. Practice continues during Saturday afternoon, however, the [...]
