9 Things You are Getting Wrong in Marketing Football

1. You aren’t actively seeking relationships with alumni/fan clubs There are 252 Division I football teams and 32 NFL teams. It doesn’t matter where you live, there is an alumni or college fan club waiting for you to offer them sanctuary in your building. These folks are loyal and come in groups. Yes, you will have to discount for them a bit, but they will also come back when they aren’t with their group and the alumni clubs operate through basketball season. They are college educated and typically spend money happily if they feel accommodated. Building programs to attract these guests does take some effort, but the rewards are significant. A typical alumni club will communicate their schedule to you for the season and, if you are their preferred viewing venue, that is additional exposure at no extra cost. New [...]

Copa America 2016 & European Championship 2016

You may have heard soccer referred to as the “beautiful game.” Maybe you agree, maybe you don’t, but for sure you should like it this summer with the arrival of two major international competitions. Starting Friday, June 3rd, the Copa America 2016 lands on US soil for the first time ever. On the following Friday, June 10th, the European Championship kicks off, often referred to as the “real World Cup.” The great news is they both air during different revenue periods and are 100% on regular TV channels. If you don’t remember, the Copa America 2016 was central to this past year’s FIFA corruption scandal, complete with federal indictments, international intrigue, and embarrassing perp walks. That’s all behind us now and the event is sure to be a big deal with venues coast to coast hosting many of football’s (soccer to you and me) international [...]

Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Market Football

We see this dance every year. It begins in late July when operators realize that football starts in two weeks and they haven’t done anything to market for it. We hear, “Not really a big deal because we are always busy during football season, so there is no reason to add the strain and expense of marketing for it.” Then the season ends with a thump, especially if your local team didn’t do well, and suddenly it’s winter and it slows waaaaay down. It’s a classic error to not make the connection between your busiest times and the slowest. You may have heard the adage: the easiest customer to get is the one that is already in your building. It’s a cliché because it’s true. The key to ‘year round’ marketing your business is to ensure you turn your strongest revenue periods into [...]

Yankee Sports Bars, Fans Won’t See Opening Day

At 1:05 pm, Monday afternoon, April 4, 2016, Masahiro Tanaka will throw the first pitch of the New York Yankees’  2016 season. And if you live in the New York area outside of NYC, you probably won’t be able to watch the game on TV.   The Yankees and Astros aren’t the only contest that day. YES (Yankees Entertainment Sports Network) and Comcast are currently locked in a carriage dispute. A carriage dispute is a disagreement over the right to “carry" a broadcaster's signal. Carriage disputes are usually about money (duh), and can end up as drag-out public relations battles.     Don’t want to be a hostage in a PR battle? Cut the cord. Online offerings, which sidestep broadcast and cable entirely, give fans (and sports bars) new choices. While the sports streaming offerings haven’t reached the level of a Netflix or [...]

Lack of Individual Sound Costing Sports Bars, Restaurants Money

Individual sound in your location When we began the process of developing a survey surrounding sports sound in your restaurants, I was fairly sure I knew what the results would show. I have 20+ years of experience operating sports themed locations and my experience told me that sound is a nice luxury, but it’s not that important to guests. Boy was I wrong… Time to listen to your guests To start, only 19% of you play sound all day every day. And since only 13% of you have a system for delivering individual sound, that means that most of you aren’t providing this level of personal service to your guests. Given the volume of programming that you buy, it was shocking to learn that so few of you offer this additional experience enhancement for your most loyal and die-hard guests. There were several [...]

The Madness of March Madness

WOOHOO! March Madness is just two weeks away. Every year, we get emails asking for the schedule in advance and every year we have to remind people, except for Thursday and Friday of the first weekend, it doesn’t matter what time, but who is playing that drives the traffic. That being said the link below will take you to last year’s schedule, so you can see what the likely time schedules will look like. All times are Eastern.   Last year's bracket will give you a rough idea on scheduling Hype vs. reality While I love the atmosphere the tournament creates, it’s much more hype than reality. Starting with Play-In games on Tue/Wed Mar 16-17 the hype begins, but the games are between 16th and 11th seeds, and they typically don’t drive traffic as much as they are a passing interest for guests. [...]

Why Sports Bars Need to Stream Web-only Games

I have been preaching for years that the way TV will be consumed in the future is going to change. When the NFL aired a game on Yahoo! this season I was proven clairvoyant. The NFL’s experiment was a perfect use case for understanding the future of live sports on the Internet. USA Today broke down what they thought were the pros and cons of the live stream. Pros: Focused on the mobile experience and the picture quality. US Today compared the game to broadcast quality and lauded the production values. Cons: Some technical issues with buffering and it wasn’t on a TV, so screen size was limited. That is to say, the NFL is better viewed on a big TV. However, the biggest revelation is the number of people unable to stream the game from their computers to their TVs because they lack the technical expertise. This means [...]

This Weekend in Sports TV: February 6, 2016

Super Bowl 50 is this week and that means the weekend sports schedule is fairly horrible. Nobody wants to compete with a game that draws 100 million sets of eyes. That being said, there are some quality items that you can use to build other parts of your guest following. UFC Fight Night Let’s start with the free UFC event on Saturday at 8pm ET on FS1(219). The main event features Johny Hendricks vs Stephen Thompson. Both are contenders fighting for a shot at the 170lbs Title. Free events like these are the foundation you need to build upon to justify your investment in the UFC PPV schedule. Add to these programming like The Ultimate Fighter and you can prove to your guests that you get MMA and UFC right. NCAA Basketball Heats Up The NCAA Basketball schedule is fairly light this weekend [...]

This Weekend in Sports TV: February 12, 2016

With a terrific schedule of action this weekend, you’ll have plenty of choices to entertain your guests. As we always encourage, use the programming you purchase to both entertain your guests and gain their trust. Even one TV showing something obscure can create a loyal guest. And remember, you can find the listings for every sporting event airing on TV in our SportsTV Guide. AHHH, NASCAR, FINALLY This weekend kicks off with the beginning of the NASCAR season and it’s all about the newly renovated facilities at the Daytona International Speedway. With the live practice runs on Friday night, your guests will get their first view of the incredible $400 million worth of upgrades. And that’s not the only thing in NASCAR that got upgrades this year. Check out this year’s preview of the new team paint schemes. Practice continues during Saturday afternoon, however, the [...]
